Read: Psalm 6
May I begin this writing with a personal statement concerning our church family here in Hot Springs? These last many months have brought to us a myriad of struggles and sorrows. How thankful I am to have seen and experienced the sweet sustaining grace of Jesus, and that same sentiment has been echoed by many friends. Today I am once again sending this devotion. A reminder that Almighty God sees the tears that fall when no one else sees. Whether the trial is large or small, we walk with a family who loves us and a God Who sees us.
I love the beautiful song, sung by Steve Green, ‘People Need The Lord’. The precious truth in this very biblical song is a lifeline in a world that often feels as if it is spinning out of control and that no one sees or cares. The lyrics read in part:
Everyday they pass me by, I can see it in their eye Empty people filled with care, headed who knows where On they go through private pain, living fear to fear Laughter hides their silent cries, only Jesus hears Jesus sees and hears!
That is truth the Bible often repeats, and we have needed this precious reminder ever since Genesis 3, when sin changed everything! Where there had been only joy and beauty, sorrow and pain rushed in, and it didn't take long! We are never told how many years passed between Adam and Eve's expulsion from Eden until the terrible day when Cain murdered Abel, but can you imagine the raw pain and grief that Adam and Eve experienced when their firstborn committed that horrific act, murdering his own brother! No, we aren't specifically told that they wept, but isn't it likely that they did! If so, those were tears the Savior saw and, He took note of them, Psalm 56:8!
What about Sarai whom we meet later on in Genesis. Year after year, she and Abram waited for the promise of a child. Were there tears when month after month, they faced disappointment! If so, the Creator/Redeemer took note of those tears too! That was only the beginning. The pages of the Bible are sprinkled with the tears of the people it chronicles, both the weeping we read about and the sadness seen only by the Lord.
In the scripture reading for today, the psalmist laments that his bed is drenched with his tears! Although he is weary, he consoles himself with the fact that the Lord has heard his weeping!
It is no different in our own lives! There are tears we cry that no one sees, and we live in a world of people where this is true too! Each one carries pain, and some of this sadness remains hidden even from precious loved ones.
Oh, how we long for the time when weeping will be a thing of the past, a part of the old order of things that has passed away, Revelation 21:1-6! Oh, what an awesome promise made by an awesome God! For now, though, we live, sometimes crying unseen tears! When this is the case, we can be comforted by the fact that our Savior too, wept tears in Gethsemane. Though His friends did not console Him, the Bible says that He was heard, Hebrews 5:7. Oh how good it is to know that we have a Savior Who experienced the feelings that are common to us. No wonder we are welcome to come to Him for help. When we do, we will find Him to be understanding, Hebrews 4:14-16.
